************** FAXBACK SYSTEM INTRODUCED!!! *******************
For the latest Technical Support information on Now Software products, call 503-274-2815 and then press 5 to access our 24-hour FaxBack Information System.
You'll be able to select from a number of documents, and the system will send them to your fax machine within a few minutes.
Before running the Now Fun!™ 1.0.1 Updater, you should restart your machine with no extensions running (especially virus protection software). The best way to accomplish this is to restart the Macintosh while holding down the shift key-this disables all extensions, and you should see a message to this effect in the "Welcome to Macintosh" box.
The Updater will update the Now Fun! 1.0 control panels and screen savers on your startup volume. The Updater can not update the Now Fun! 1.0 master disks because some of the files on the Now Fun! 1.0 master disks are compressed.
Installer
All software replaced by Now Fun! is moved into a folder called "Replaced Items" which is located in the "Now Fun!™ 1.0" folder at the main level of your hard disk. The items that will be moved include all versions of: Cursor Animator, DeskPicture, Screen Locker, and Snd Control.
The Installer does NOT look in the "Duplicate Items" folder created by Startup Manager (from Now Utilities™).
With version 1.0.1 of Now Fun!, all preferences files will be located in a folder called "Now Fun! Prefs" located within your Preferences folder.
FunColors
Due to the way that System 7 handles color, some color combinations cannot be displayed. FunColors displays an “X” over the colors that are not available in the color palette.
FunColors is a control panel, but not an extension — meaning that no icon for FunColors is displayed during startup.
Page 5 of the manual states that there is a FunColors Prefs file on disk one. This file is actually created by FunColors.
FunCursors
Page 55 of the manual states that the default "Private Memory" setting for FunCursors is 32KB. The actual default value is 48KB.
If the Mouse Up Arrow Pointer is set to the system default but a custom cursor is assigned to the Mouse Down state, the custom cursor isn’t displayed when the mouse button is pressed. In the current implementation of FunCursors, the Mouse Down cursor is dependent on the setting of the Mouse Up state, so that when the Mouse Up Arrow Pointer is set to the system default, then FunCursors disables all activities related to the Arrow Pointer. In a future version, the Mouse Up and Mouse Down states will be treated separately.
On 68000-class Macintoshes (Plus, SE, Classic, etc.) FunCursors may cause the pointer to flicker between the Mouse Up Arrow Pointer and the Watch cursor. This will be addressed in a future version of FunCursors.
FunPictures
FunPictures Memory Usage Chart (All memory sizes in Kilobytes)
Monitor Size B&W 4-Bit 8-Bit 24-Bit
9" (Classic) 22 NA NA NA
13" RGB 39 151 301 1,201
16" RGB 65 255 509 1,527
Note: Using the “disk-based” feature will greatly reduce the amount of memory used by FunPictures at the cost of slower redrawing of the desktop.
FunScreenSavers
FunScreenSavers will play all screen saver modules included with Now Fun!, as well as Berkeley Systems' After Dark™ and More After Dark™ screen saver modules. FunScreenSavers 1.0.1 does NOT play the Star Trek™ or Disney™ modules from Berkeley Systems.
Projector™ Module: If you plan to have your monitor color depth set to 24-bit mode and use the Projector Module, you should make sure that any Projector files you use have their memory partition sizes set to at least 3 MB (3,000K). To check or change a Projector file's memory partition, select the file in the Finder and choose "Get Info" from the File menu. In the Get Info window that opens next, the number in the "Preferred Size" field is the memory partition; type in a new number if necessary.
If you have selected the “Lock at Startup” option in FunScreenSavers, but forgotten your password, you’ll be unable to use the Shift key to disable your extensions at startup. To get around this, follow the instructions on Page 179. Then, after restarting, open the FunScreenSavers control panel, click “Passwords…” and select the “Lock Screen at Startup” checkbox. Then deselect the checkbox and click “OK.” You’ll be prompted to enter a new password before you can close the dialog box. Once you’ve done this, you’ll be returned to the control panel. Holding down the Shift key at startup will now disable your extensions again.
FunSounds
Some applications seem to do mysterious things within a window without actually closing or opening it that continually triggers the sound assigned to "window is opened." If you wish, you can use FunSounds' Exclude feature to exclude FunSounds from such applications.
If you change the icon for your trash can, FunSounds will not play the selected sound for the events "When the Trash icon expands" or "When the Trash is emptied."
For the sound events “Disk Eject” or "Disk Insert,” FunSounds will play a sound when a floppy disk is ejected or inserted. FunSounds will not play a sound for the ejection or insertion of CD-ROMs or any other type of removable media.
If you change your system beep sound in the Sound control panel, the sound assigned to the FunSounds “Beep” event also changes. The opposite is true as well.
